Nick Cage has two acting "hits" in row. The rather neglected Lord of War and now this.
Recently, beginning with American Beauty, we've seen a group of films about non-heroes oozing angst and ennui. Broken Flowers, Lost in Translation, that Coen bros. Billy Bob Thornton b/w flick, Lord of War.
I like most of these films but I don't know if the genre has legs. At any rate, it's a decent way to spend a few hours but expect to be hit over the head with metaphors.
Follow Ups:
Definitely ripped off Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman in having a movie start with a kind of depressed Nicolas Cage doing an internal monologue (Adaptation) and by having him hit with a flying drink (Being John Malkovich).Otherwise I liked it and I liked that even when he accepts himself we're not being told to feel good about that acceptance or about who/what he is. Very similar to Lord Of War in that they never try to make him very likeable (though in the case of The Weather Man it's not too hard to have some empathy/sympathy).
"Where are we going? And what am I doing in this hand basket?"
American cinema trying to find it's feet?
Well the American cinema is the mother of all the rest.
the Lumière Brothers and Méliès.
Shame on you.
A new Méliès film has been discovered right now. Title? Cléopâtre, length? two minutes.
An that made the 202th film on about 520 that he did made, whose possession we now enjoy. And I persiste of course, Americans films are the mother of all the others...Nobody is going to argue about that...Not even you...
doucement!
nous pouvons aussi avoir des opinions différent, n'est pas?
;0)
Heureusement! Still....
Was one of the biggest shit ever. But a film I now much higher value is LiT. After the...forth viewing I think this will become a classical.
AB. It's a satire on American life so your lack of American experience may disqualify you from appreciating its considerable charms.
Yes the charm of killing oneself...He-he
Art and morality BTW are an entity for me. I always have to go through the shades...
