of Iran's society through the eyes of one woman.
First off, she's the most powerful woman I've ever seen depicted on film.
The prostitute, the depressed lovers, the mourning old woman with her faith, and the relationship of the central figure to her son... all shined a penetrating, fearless light on modern day Iran. Pornography, abortion, illicit drug use, divorce, family disintegration is quite a different picture from that most Westerners hold of the theocracy that is Iran.
