Lasse Halstrom directed this John Irving (novel and screenplay) story of a young orphan trained in obstetrics by the doctoe in charge of the orphanage. Michael Caine is the doctor and he performs illegal abortions as a sideline. Tobey Maquire plays the young man and he refuses to perform abortions but does do deliveries. Charlyze Theron is Maquire's love interest. To broaden himself, Maquire seeks alternate surroundings at an apple farm where he eventually falls in love with Theron, even though she is engaged to a paratrooper off fighting in WW II. When one of Maquire's co-workers becomes pregnant in an incestuous relationship Maquire's moral fabric is threatened. This is a wonderful, though sad, movie.
Nitpickers will note that the drive in theater has a wide screen, an anachronism in the 1940's.

Beautifully filmed movie, well acted, topical. But I somehow felt it was like sitting in tepid, warm water, when you either want it either cold or hot. It did not generate much of an emotion reaction from me, either postive or negative.

...looks 'movie star' gorgeous, has a nude scene and is a good reason, if you can find no other, to see this film.
