To me I couldn't care less which was closer to "the book" if "the book" was fiction. I understand why others such as yourself do care, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who is just more interested in which movie is better.
As for this movie, haven't seen the new one yet.

I read the book a long time ago, but don't remember the details--you're probably right.
It's terrible, but of the Roald Dahl books I read when I was young, Danny, Champion of the World sticks out most in my mind mainly because of the drugging and poaching of pheasants. Who isn't a fan of justifiable crime?
