Nikita Mikhalkov has only made one good film so far: "An Unfinished Piece for Player Piano". Sadly, his career parallels that of Polanski's: excellent debut followed by crappy work. Polanski too started with a masterpiece - "Knife in the Water" - but the following films were mediocre at best.
Follow Ups:
I hardly think that "Rosemary's Baby" and "Chinatown" are medicore.
Chinatown has legs, but the Baby is as empty as they come. If you put the Repultion in its place, you would have an argument.
Chinatown doesn't have any legs, very overrated film. The Pianist: pretentious crap, Lina Wertmuller's Seven Beauties is a much better story of survival during WWII.N
But the Chinatown is entertaining.
I am not a fan of the piano, I think the one he made prior to that -Raba Liubvi, was his best work. Largely due to a great cast he assembled there. But yes, mostly a pale career, except the Burnt by the Sun scored high in the West. And it does have good moments.
Polanski... yes, the Knife was great, but of course most here would say the Chinatown was the high point of his career... followed of course by an outright dreck of Pianist.
character of the German officer, portrayed as human, no?
I thought that was the better part.
