pass the bong.
A very powerful film, if a bit dated to some, about the comparative worths of "civilization" and "primitive" societies. The footage of the aborigines and the other New Guinea tribes is spectacular.
Shroeder is a strange director and he's been so for a long time, apparently.
Reversal of Fortune and Maria Full of Grace are, obviously, superior works but OBC has an unsurpassed beauty and freedom from cynicism which is infectious.
Oh, the story: a bourgeois woman seeking to trade in tribal artifacts becomes seduced by a group of outcasts whose goal is to find a mythical valley in remote New Guinea. Imagine Belle de Jour gone wild...
Follow Ups:
Saw that a million years ago in an art house theater. All I remember is that it was trippy and there was nudity.
One of the great overlooked gems.

I see it's out on DVD now - I have had the record for years and never seen the film.
Having lived in Papua New Guinea in the 1970's, and spent some time in Goroka (where the Mudmen live), I should probably look it up.BTW, Obscured By Clouds is such an apt name - you wouldn't understand unless you have been there.

Obviously a very different setting but...

Heh heh, similar, but not so conductive to walking around in the nude :-)
Definitely not and at this point in my life getting to walk around nude in cloud filled tropics sounds like a lot more fun that being cold for 20 days in the mountains.I'd love to see Borneo... the jungles, beaches and mountains all have an allure. I think I've also read that there has been great progress in some human rights issues there.
I'll have to see that movie.
