I recently saw a DVD of this great movie: even only because of HAHAHAHA!!! Herbert Gronemeyer as the journalist. That guy became a Schlager-singer) and I have to admit I was rather disappointed by the quality of the picture in terms of visual satisfaction like for instance 'The Wild Bunch' which is a lot older movie, but it seemed like they copied the submarine from a VHS which has been stored in a damp basement for a couple of months. Some money less in the wallet and some more in the river,

I have not seen the DVD yet. But I remember the first time I saw it. The lights went down the the theater went silend. Nobody went ot he bathroom, not drink runs, I was really on the edge of my seat. The guy next to me didn't even eat his popcorn. Too intense. I wil lget the DVD as soon as it hits $15.Great movie!

Das Boot is an excellent movie. Its also an excellent book if you haven't read it.
The Region 1 DVD looks and sounds spectacular. This is indeed one of the best war films ever made.
The soundtrack has been rerecorded and the music sounds pretty okay, just like the voices, but the quality of image compared with other releases was rather disappointing, I thought. And yes, it's a great movie. I laughed my arse off when the captain was listening to the radio and announced Schalke '04 had won their match; a nice touch of irony in these circumstances and at last a movie about the War without polarizing the 'bad' and the 'good' guys.

The US version in English IMO, not only does it look great, it sounds great too in 5.1 mixed Dolby Digital. I saw the original German in subtiltled in L.A. back in 1983 in the theater. Definitely one of my all time favorites! Highly recommended in case you've not yet seen it.
