A quiet and full of fine humor film. Leaning a bit on the side of Wenders " Far away- So Close", with a brillant Murray, for the one who do like him ( in the mean time I do ).
A so-called road movie.
Not a must film but a " can " if you got to much time and do like Jarmush.
Nice show.

...while I love Bill Murray and have enjoyed most of his film work, the ending of Broken Flowers left me a little cold.The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly (Jan. 20 with Clooney on the cover) has a "Murray-O-Meter" on page 56. It's a graph of his movies from Meatballs through Broken Flowers. The high point is Groundhog Day and Broken Flowers rates about the same as What About Bob, a little higher than Ghostbusters and Stripes, and a little below Caddyshack, Rushmore and The Life Aquaitic.
I'm pretty much in agreement with the Murray-O-Meter, except I would put Stripes a little higher.
slightly below Lost In Translation and Caddyshack (the grandaddy of em all IMHO). I gotta say this, even just thinking about What About Bob, has got me snickering. Not as good of a movie as several of the others you mentioned for sure, but when it clicked, it had some out there momments.

Jarmush dropped the ball on this. He should have filmed it in B&W but left the "pink" elements pink so they hit you over the head even harder! Murray was boring and under-utilized, I think almost any half decent actor could have played that part. A poor re-hash of his role in "Lost in Translation" is what it most reminded me of. There certainly wasn't the proper character developement to justify why he was so zombie-like or how he came to be that way. No real clue as to who he was pre-zombie. Maybe he was always a zombie? Would have taken about 2 minutes to work that out. Jeffrey Wright was great, as were the supporting actresses. I always enjoy the slow, meandering Jarmush pace and his portrayal of anynomous U.S. towns...Not enough quirk nor as well-written as the best Jarmush (Down By Law,Ghostdog), not as painfully dull as "Cigarettes...".
Mediocre and disappointing IMO.

Perhaps with so many films providing so many answers, after all, most American film caters to teenage boys, their biggest demographic, that when a film comes along that assumes the viewer has some ability to intuit what came before, the viewer is left wanting.Murray played a man who made a fair amount of money within the computer industry. He now no longer needs to work. He is a man, similar those that many of have crossed paths with, who lacks motivation, or creativity. Now that his work is over, he has nothing to occupy his time, developed no interests beyond his work, and cannot think of anything to do with his life, except sit around, listen to music, and drink wine. This lack of motivation caused his live in girlfriend to leave. That is his life story, which is explained throughout the film. Jarmusch requires some participation from the viewer.
Enter this potential child. His neighbor, on the other hand, while seemingly less educated, less wealthy, less "cultured" is much more motivated, and happy, and prompts Murray to begin a journey that, in so far as the film is concerned, provides nothing more than for Murray do something beyond sitting at home.
Murray's character is one of complacency. Frankly, Murray acting like anything other than a zombie would not have been appropriate, because that is what the character demanded. Tom Cruise is not a character actor. He generally acts the same in most films. He is a lead actor. I am not picking on Tom Cruise. Jimmy Stewart generally played the same type of character as well. Murray has developed into a damn fine character actor, which will act depending upon the needs of the character.
Murray's performance, while similar to his role in Lost in Translation, has different nuances. In Translation, he plays a character who goes through the motions of life, and which bring him no joy until he meets a girl who brings a turn off the straight and narrow to his life. In Broken Flowers he plays a character who no longer bothers to go through the motions of life. In Translation, he displayed some of his smarmy attitude, albeit very understated. His character clearly changed after meeting Scarlett, and did so with subtly. On the other hand, in Flowers, he displayed none of that spark.
I feel really sorry.

And thanks for explaining the film to me- I'da of never figured it out otherwise.Subleties such as you describe- much like Jarmash's "pink" are often lost upon me. As far as participating in film/s, it wasn't my lack thereof or fail to "intuit" that leads me to believe that Murry's character wasn't properly developed. It was the fail to properly develope Murry's character. I'm NOT blaming Murry...
I still think Murry wasn't the right choice. He's been trying to break "form" since he made "Beneath The Volcano" and slowly, succeeding. I like Murry- agree he's a good character actor. Just don't think he was the right guy for the job...
Comparing BP to LIT is probably a poor choice on my part as the character in BP has much more in common with Jack Nicholson's Schimdt, re:complacency/zombie/"wake-up" call/search. They just got there in different ways.And had different reactions. BTW: That's also another "road movie"...Trash Tom Cruise all you want, he couldn't act his way out of a paper bag uless it required him to be angry or nuts.In either case he'd be method acting.
And, after your insights into Broken Petals (intuit, right!) I still think it mediocre and dissapointing.I expect more and better from Jarmush, even if he did make "Year of the Horse". If "Broken Flowers" is poetry it's Rod McCuen and not Lawrence Ferlighetti.
But, who knows? Maybe I'll appreciate it more on a 2nd viewing down the line.

Martin Donovan?I thoroughly enjoy the work of Jim Jarmush, just for the fact that he tells stories with interesting characters. This reminds me of another favorie of mine, Hal Hartley, who also uses low affect characters to tell his off beat, and to many, what appear as banal stories.
In the case of BF, we see yet another story of mid- life crisis. When you suddenly realize that you have lived most of your life and you actually have less time in front of you than behind you.
What has been accomplished? What happened to your dreams and expectations?
Is this ALL THERE IS?
This guy lived the sweet free high life of the financially successful bachelor, complete with an endless string of temporary sexual trysts that allowed him some pleasure and passion, but never caused him to develop any real intimate relationships.Then it occurs to him that he actually has nothing. Not really.
The insane idea that he may have a son awakens something in him that drives him to discover that one thing he lacks... The last scenes are knockout, IMO. So much of human emotion in so few moments.
I thought the film was a good slice of life that all of us confront in one way or another, and the contrasting liveliness and color of the support characters only proves that we can make a B&W film in technicolor. :)
I resent to the physical nearness to " Lost " even the flower girl remind me of SJ.
As for the rest, I can blame you to see it that way. I may have too.

I could not agree more.
I just saw this, and you are right, a pleasant film. Part of the fun was watching actresses such as Sharon Stone, Tilda Swinton, Julie Delpy, and Jessica Lange almost unrecognizable in smaller roles. And who would have guessed twenty years ago that Bill Murray, he of such energy almost to the point of being annoying, would be one of the best actors at being able to draw the viewer in while doing almost nothing?
You are right too for pointing out the small but neat roles of these actresses!
And I would just ad the fun with " Lo "....
After seeing it, I thought that it must be quite a lot more difficult to make 'a quiet film' that draws us in, more difficult than we imagine.
Jarmusch is becoming a quiet master at this....
What did dissapoint me was the end, not as such but because of the over simplification, of: Yesterday is past, tomorrow one never knows, and now is now, as a legation to his son.
That was NOT brillant...
For some the ending may be frustrating. Without attempting to open a firestorm, I think that Ebert may have been right on this account. That Murray finding if he has a child is not about finding a child, but more about finding a purpose in an otherwise empty life. The quest to find existence or non-existence of his child in the world is nothing more than exercise to bring purpose in a life where there is none. At the end of the day, the journey is what is important, not the prize.
..there's also buddhist references in there, not the first time with Jarmusch: his 'son' asks if he's a buddhist (it's ambigous whether or not it's his son, of course) and maybe the point is also that the passing on of some wisdom doesn't necessarily have to be to someone who is our blood, because we're all family, in the buddhist sense.
Well, not the ending was, but the last words were!

So when we he have to look for a daughter?Not the film as such is questioned but the force of it, the traces it leaves on / in us.
Anyway, I wonder at the next viewing what will have happen in between.
Will it be like Lost?
