like many of his films, it lacks a certain tension. It's hard to analyze "why" this film doesn't make a greater impression on a viewer. Perhaps Stephane Audran is too "cool." It's almost impossible to think of her as an ardent lover. She seems so narcissist that no one else is necessary.
Jean Louis Trintignant (her husband in "real life") couldn't even make their scenes together rise above tepid.
I do wish critics would stop the comparisons to Hitchcock. Chabrol has none of his great skills, absolutely is one-dimensional, and exhibits no sense of humor or irony. In short, Chabrol seems a pompous bore as does the main character in this film.
Follow Ups:
Yes.
I DO like her. Yes, cold, but good kild of cold, and I would forgive her many transgressions just for her role in Discrete Charm...I agree on comparisson with Hitch... even though I am not a Hitch fan, Chabrol just doesn't raise to that level. So in some small sense - yes, there are visible parallels, but only as a pupil who failed many a test.

I honestly can't even guess how it will play to a Westerner not intimate with the details of Russian history, and with the apparently less than perfect subs, but I truly believe this is one of the movies that does present an interesting stop on your journey, something worth discussing - so outside the "norm" it is. It also won several international awards.

Or was it Young Man with Movie Camera? Anyways, I would be curious to hear your reaction, but as I said, not an easy film to watch.
