"Platform" shows what four of them have been as we accompany an "art" troupe of young Chinese as they take their road show through much of Northern China, culture wars, and several decades.
This film hasn't a plot, well-painted characters. Almost all shots are medium to long range. The sense of an individual's alienation, not only from his friends and family but from even the hope for change, appears like science fiction to a Westerner's eyes.
One scene, of the band's go-go girls performing to a boombox on the flatbed of a truck at the entrance of a rural town in the most remote corner of China, would be humorous if one could forget what these cultural "wars" cost in terms of human slaughter.
