Thought he performed well in roles as Professor Julius Kelp, Baby
Kelp and Buddy Love in "The Nutty Professor"-1963. ~AH
He did play a pompous celebrity who had credentials as a comedian but was never, ever funny!I love that movie by the way and I agree, all the performances were amazing. Bernhard in particular was so good sometimes, I felt embarrassed for the character she was playing.
I read one of Dennis Miller's books of quips years ago and he said that when Lewis tried to be overly serious (pompous) he was funny and that when he tried to be comical, he was not funny. I could relate well enough at that to laugh. IMO, main reason for this perceived pomposity was a deep, perhaps desperate desire to gain respect from his peers, especially from his former older and more sophisticated sidekick, Dean Martin, who had shunned him. Unfortunately for Jerry, that persona came across as funny. But I didn't laugh at his serious performance in "The King of Comedy". And his schizo performances in "The Nutty Professor" as nerdy, bumbling Prof. Kelp and suave, debonair nightclub singer, Buddy Love, IMO, says loads bout his relationship with Dino. ~AH
