This has probably been covered a million times before, but since I rarely post here, I'll give it a try anyway. What is your favorite sports film of all time? Though the ending redefines the word "depressing," mine is "Million Dollar Baby." Personally, I think it may be Clint Eastwood's crowning achievement, in a career chocked full of career peaks. I used to know a girl who was a very good female boxer, and I think the film portrays the violence of that sport quite unflichingly--while somehow portraying the humanity of everyone involved, particularly Hilary Swank's character. The performances are all absolutely mesmerizing, and if you're receptive, the ending will touch you to the very core of your soul, like it did to me. What are your choices?

...Champions (with John Hurt) about a horse and jockey overcoming potentially fatal injur/illness etc. But unlike most horse movies - this one is really quite nice.I have a special fondness for Eight Men Out because A) I admire the work of John Sayles & love the amazing cast, and B) I'm in it. Somewhere. 8MO was filmed mostly in my home-town of Indy and we went down to be extras one chilly morning for scenes at the old Bush Stadium, which doubled for both ballparks in the film.
Being from Indiana, most of my friends like Hoosiers & Rudy.
Football - Everybody's All American. Dennis Quaid and Jessica Lange were made for each other in this one. Quaid's fading superstar performance in the film's last third is great.Hoosiers for Basketball
Field Of Dreams and The Natural for bezbull
Tin Cup for golf. Caddyshack was a superior movie, but Cup captured the love of the game better.
Bend It Like Beckham for soccer.

Sorry, but I'm not into many sports films. They seem so predictable... with the exception of "Million Dollar Baby" This was pretty darn good, and I did get a kick out of Bad News Bears, and Heaven Can Wait.
Hoop Dreams.
...Horse Feathers. MASH (the feature) each had a funny football game sequence. Love Burt Lancaster's committment to the Thorpe character. Also liked Phyllis Thaxter, Charles Bickford and Dick Wesson, too. I'd like to see a remake. (Maybe with Philip Seymour Hoffman in the lead role? Just fooling.) "Brian's Song' and 'Something For Joey," too, were terrific TV movies made with Fball in mind.
A good movie will probably have more to it, than today's entertainment.

Most sports movies are not very good but that one stuck a nerve.
The Eric Liddell character's faith always effects me. His race at the Olympics with his voice over saying, "God made me fast, and when I run, I feel His pleasure" along with the way his face becomes ecstatic gets me every time (and I'm neither Christian or religious).
"Where are we going? And what am I doing in this hand basket?"
I have the very same reaction to that scene. The other one that gets me every time is Sam Mussabini, (beautifully played by the great Ian Holm) all alone in his hotel room as he hears the sound of God Save The Queen being played, thus revealing that Harold has won the race ("Harold......my son").
