Chanwook Park.
Terrible killings occur in a military shack at the border of N and S Korea and a novice is sent in to whitewash the situation and defuse the potential for war.
Since so much of the film depends on clever plot twists I'll dispense with any plot summary and merely say: Go forth and rent!
The acting uniformly is excellent, absolutely free from the mannerisms our actors feel obliged to use: smoking, the wiggly eyeball thing, exaggerated and inappropriate voicings, etc.
Like the similarly sterling "Oldboy," this one stands up to repeated viewings (I watched it the next day, as well, with even more enjoyment).
Follow Ups:
of Murder!!
Both absolutely excellent.
Like I said, Korea has been putting out some really well made movies in the few years.

at "his" mag below is superb. The author obviously knows mucho about Asian film (much less about Am if he thinks Spielberg and Lucas ever were avant-garde) and that article has given me about 25 movies to see now---- damn it! I just hope Netflix has many of them.
I've seen most of the ones mentioned. Good luck with netflix, they may have some of the movies, but not all. They won't have any of the ones I listed below. IMO, that's more than enough justification to get an all-region player.

buying the tapes, right?
I don't like to own stuff.
No, buy the discs. :-)
I don't mind owning. It does open up ALOT of possiblities that would be closed otherwise. Most of my import collection never made it to R1, despite having English subtitles. Aren't you the one complaing about the lack of talent in Hollywood? There's talent out there, but the movies don't always make it over here. Finding a US destributor can be a hassle, but things are finally getting better. I suspect you are relatively new to Asian movies, but the choice is yours.
Not to mention, many of the imported movies are heavily edited by the US distributors. Mirimax is famous for turning imports into jiberish. I was looking at copies of "The Legend of Zu", and saw that the US version has 25 minutes cut out. I'll try to find an import version.
To each his own.

I'd not appreciated much before "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... Spring."
My wife spent six years in Japan and she introduced me.
.
I shall try to find a copy.
seems to not only use terrific music, he has the very rare knack of not only knowing when but NOT when to use music.
I'll have to watch Oldboy, thanks for the heads-upGrins
it'll "blossom" in the second viewing.
