What is wrong with copying a CD or DVD if you own it? Of course, copying a DVD may bypass it's copy protection technology which is a violation of the DMCA, although copying something you own is technically legal.
My friend makes copies of his favorite DVD's, ripping out the extra audio tracks, menus, and advertising, so when he puts the DVD in, it begins playing the movie immediately.
With all the extra, nonsensical laws 'protecting' the copyright of the movie studios and recording artists, it looks like the law of first sale is going the way of the dodo. Really, these laws don't prevent piracy, as you don't need to crack any encryption to duplicate a DVD.
