What do you consider the funniest movie ever? You can tell a lot about a person by their answer. I enjoy comedies, maybe I can learn about some ones I haven't seen.
Follow Ups:
To Be or Not To Be (original only); My Man Godfrey; Horse Feathers

Well - discounting movies designed as comedies, Ed Wood Jr. in drag (big blonde) and Bela Lugosi ranting 'pull de stringggg - snips and snails and puppy dog tails' is pretty good! Also - any of Christopher Walken's recent work such as 'Blast From the Past' and the Prophecy movies are funny to me. Walken can just move a bit and be way funnier than a stack of 'comedians'
Freddy
His little monologue on the Saturday Night Live 25th anniversary was funnier than everything else put together.

I saw "King of Comedy" on AMC tonight and I didn't find it all that funny, I thought it was kind of sad. But Caddyshack is one of my favorites, I'm a Rodney Dangerfield fan. I think the cheesyness of a typical 80s movie makes it even funnier, like when they spontaneously start dancing in the middle of the golf course. olen.
Olen, I found it funny, sad and ironic. Admittedly, The King of
Comedy is a dark comedy, like The Cable Guy. - AH
thats not a good list, you must not have put alot of thought in your picks
I've never laughed harder than Raising Arizona.Doug Schneider
These may not be the two funniest, but I thought "Lost in America" was a scream. Two all time classic scenes, Albert Brooks telling his boss off and explaining the "nest egg" concept to Julie Haggerty. And the rockumentary about the pre fab four, "The Rutles, All You Need Is Cash" tickled me to death as well.
There's not a recent movie in the bunch! I guess they don't make 'em like they used to.
A recent movie I thought was very funny was "American Beauty," Kevin Spacey cracked me up. I loved his meeting with his boss, and his job interview at the fast food place. And the story wasn't too bad either:) Didn't it win some type of award? olen.
But over a 70-year span it makes sense statistically that most would be older. But you want recent? I laughed my head off at The Mask, and recently half-off at The Wonder Boys. But the latter is more like Ninotchka, taking a while to build up steam.

I like Victors choices and Mad Mad Mad Mad World. There was also a sleeper of a film called "Start the Revolution Without Me". Starred Gene Wilder and Donald Sutherland. Great rental if you can find it.

Truly a hoot.
Fun movie, especially if you watch it in the same viewing as any Shakespeare comedy on video. AFTHOTWTTF is a modern version of Roman New Comedy, the model for many a Renaissance comedy. I took a course in Shakespearean comedy once, and the prof started us with this film, followed by "A Comedy of Errors."
But man, this is where you are hitting paydirt with Hollywood. It has been incredibly prolific with great comedies back in the forties. Take any romantic comedy with Cary Grant (things like "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948)") or Clark Gable ("It Happened one Night" with Claudette Colbert is marvelous) and very representative of that era - the era that is gone, unfortunately. And so many great actors!
If you want to dig a bit deeper, then "Sitting Pretty" (the 1948 one)is simply incredible (if you can locate it - I couldn't). From there move onto any Clifton Webb movies and you shall never regret.
When it comes to more modern comedies with wit and subtlety, you can not beat some Russian films of the seventies and eighties, but I doubt you will find many with subtitles. Great shame, really.
"Airplane" is quite funny, but here were getting close to the area I would rather not go into...
