But man, this is where you are hitting paydirt with Hollywood. It has been incredibly prolific with great comedies back in the forties. Take any romantic comedy with Cary Grant (things like "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948)") or Clark Gable ("It Happened one Night" with Claudette Colbert is marvelous) and very representative of that era - the era that is gone, unfortunately. And so many great actors!
If you want to dig a bit deeper, then "Sitting Pretty" (the 1948 one)is simply incredible (if you can locate it - I couldn't). From there move onto any Clifton Webb movies and you shall never regret.
When it comes to more modern comedies with wit and subtlety, you can not beat some Russian films of the seventies and eighties, but I doubt you will find many with subtitles. Great shame, really.
"Airplane" is quite funny, but here were getting close to the area I would rather not go into...
