John Carpenter's masterpiece 'They Live', the ultimate alien invasion flick. Best fistfight ever filmed too.
The Hunted, an unappreciated adventure flick directed by William Friedkin, with Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro. Well paced, no filler or boring scenes.

Certainly a reference sci-fi movie with many (obvious) layers....comparable with some of the earlier Cronenberg, also.
