After a night of eating shit and pretending you enjoyed it, what could be nicer than a really good movie?I can't quite explain it, but the Oscar night, even only having watched small bits of it, put me in a rather stressed mood. I felt agitated, irritated, taken, had, bamboozled and run over by a steamroller with no violin. I suppose I would feel similarly humiliated if I had to watch a gang rape unable to do anything about it...
But I have a wise wife, and she's got her hand on the Netflix control knob, and yesterday there was yet another red envelope in our mailbox, and inside was another Fellini...
"Prova d'orchestra" is the type of a film that would give Fellini's detractors plenty of ammunition... they would say it is pointless and dumb, with no plot and no acting...
It is also the type of a film that is quintessential Fellini, as it is deep and emotional on many levels, has that incredible flow, the whirlpool of characters, scenes, episodes, moods, and... music.
But once again I am at the point where my language is not up to the task, the object being far greater than most of us can feel with our hands or see with our eyes, so there... take this for what you want.
To say it was a welcome relief after being submerged in a tank of feces for a night would be a gross understatement.
Follow Ups:
... but is this an actual photo of you with patrick in back being chauffeured to an art's fest screening Fellini flicks? I like the Grey Poupon touch, it's a classic! ;^)
his last for Fellini (he died in April of 1979). According to some reviewer that I’ve read over the internet but what the heck, does he know eh? I might want to rent this just for curiosity sakes.
My feeling was that the score, while utterly recognizable Rota, was not what made the film great. In some other Fellini films Rota's music adds tremendous impact, there is that "Ahhhhh!!!!" element, in this one it stepped into the background. Not that it was bad, far from it, just there was less rosonance with the rest of the film, and funny enough it was supposed to be one of the focal points.
You did go to the very core of the matter.
Best letter of the year.
..for you.
