Film board,When their integrity and intelligence is routinely called into question, what is left to justify (rationalize?) viewership of this type of programming?
One more thing: the actors'/actresses' acceptance speeches. Isn't that ALSO acting (presumably better than the roles they're receiving prizes/awards for!)

(epitomized by the Oscars in every sense)
Follow Ups:
This was the first Oscar's I've sat through in years, and I kept wondering how Parker and Stone would satirize each bit of self-agrandisement and other silliness.

I can't kvetch about the Bush administration and the Christian right and reality tv all the time. Oscar makes a nice change of pace.I completely understand what they are and don't get terribly upset one way or the other very often. (It would be nice to see Marty get his Oscar someday however, only because he seems to care.)
I'm always curious if the Academy inadvertently rewards film excellence now and then - it does, in fact, happen.
This year the top BP noms didn't actualy include any films I loathed for a change. Rather a good group IMO except for Crash, which many others loved. Every BP nom at least represented a filmmaker's personal vision - rather refreshing IMO although it says more about the paucity of quality studio pics than it says about AMPAs going indy.
As long as one keeps in mind Oscar is an industry party in an industry town, that it's about film business and not "film art", why then one can have a jolly good time ogling the dressses, the hair- dos, the faux pas and surprises.

...LA. That should tide you over.
...handicap factor. Like handicapping the KY Derby, only more categories.Yup, the doc and foreign film categories are something of a disgrace, but as I said, I can't use up all my indignation on the Republican right, I gotta spread it around.
Not being American I didn't realise KY had a second meaning.
And as for a derby...
I don't watch the Oscars... or any other prize givings but then I never went to prize day when I was at school either.
But I understand some people find it entertaining. Mind you if I never see Sarah Jessica Parker trying to enthuse about a dress designer again it will be too soon...
...
...bettors.
It took me a while to realise KY was also the shorthand for Kentucky. Being outside the USA, its not actually that obvious.
But you are right... the last time I watched a horse race was... Champion The Wonder Horse.

I can only applaud the effort of a TV show that encourages people to sit down to listen to a singer perform and try to appreciate/evaluate the quality of that singer. It's exactly the absence of this kind of show that has made mainstream music a "silence-filler"...music has become a means to fill the void during a subway commute or simply as a soundtrack to a music-video. American Idol encourages people to watch and listen to a signer alone on a stage perform...and encourages people to realize why one performance might be better than another. And Simon Cowell...gotta give the man his props. He pushes these performers to rise above "karaoke pop".Are the performances great? no. But I won't slam a show for encouraging people to appreciate live performances...
Because one never knows what might happen.

Looks like the cat is out of the bag. yep it is true. the Oscars are there to specifically celebrate mediocrity. They have committies that meet to filter out any possible exellence slipping through.
and last tear was down from it's last year... Maybe Hollywood still doesn't get it. Maybe why some people watch is in hope of a return to the better years. I am not holding my breath, but I miss the classic hollywood movie years. Thanks for Netflix.
Jon Stewart and Uma also Jennifer Garnernot in any special order
Even though I do not think the Oscars are worth caring about for some reason I do. I guess they are so full of their own self worth it is catching...
even approaching "deep". But good mindless fun. And boobs f'ing everwhere. We did spend a lot of time poking fun at various celebs. Fat lips, terribly in need of a decent meal, hammered, crap dress here and there, obnoxious a'holes, immense sense of self inmportance, yada yada yada. Besides, there wasn't a whole lot better on. Sopranos would have trumped it in a heartbeat.
- I love films/movies and this is a celebration of them.
- It's a huge popular culture event that everyone will be talking about for the next few days - even *you* aparently.
- To hear the host make fun of the pompous stars.
- To see the fashion highlights and faux paus (with cleavage).
- To hear the best and worst acceptance speeches.
- To see if I guessed the winners correctly.
- As an excuse to have friends over to drink, eat and laugh on a worknight.
...
Truly... that's about it.What is particularly disgusting about ceremonies like Oscars is that everyone is given chance to feel like an important person, so they all talk a lot of idiotic nonsense, thinking the world is listening to their trash.

As I said, I only watched sporadically. And every time they opened their mouths I wanted to run away. What was that?
