I watched both of these last night. The first is from 1954 and features Humphrey Bogart as the neurotic and paranoid Captain Queeg. He and defense attorney Jose Ferrar are standouts in the cast. Soon to be stars in small roles here include Lee Marvin and E. G. Marshall. A love plot involving Ensign Keith is superfluous and annoying. The "... Court Martial" was directed for TV by Robert Altman and is an adaptation of Wouk's own stage play which also ran on broadcast TV in the fifties. It is taut and well acted. Both films serve as a wonderful double feature.
Follow Ups:
.
I read the book a few years ago and finally saw the film on television a few weeks ago. (Better late then never, right?) They were both excellent. The connection between Willie and Marie/May does indeed appear to be superfluous in the film, but it was an important acspect in the book. Willie would never have become the man he proved himself to be without her.
I was a little disappointed that the part of the story where Willie saves the Caine after an attack while Queeg abandons command was deleted... but I guess in a way it helps the film from making Queeg look *completely* unfit as a captain.
Is a solid underrated film. Bogey I fell had one of his best role back then.
One I always look regulary from time to time.
...including one of the best marches around. It's available on the 'Casablanca' album of RCA's Classic Film Scores series, CD #0422-2-RG, and of course on the original LP which I no longer have. This series by RCA is highly important to lovers of movie music. All were conducted and played VERY well by the late Charles Gerhardt and the National Philharmonic Orchestra (of London) and engineered by the great Kenneth Wilkinson.
I have the LP.
And good that you have point that out. I did too but a long time ago, here.
It was a bout time!
