Crap, I'm stoked. It's been a long 18 months (or whatever) and this junkie needs his Sopranos. Damn near forgot what happened in the last couple of epis in Season Five, but the paper this morning included a decent recap. I've been getting by with the methadone equivalent of The Shield and 24, but this is the real thing. Time to fix a margarita, crank up the Dubly Digital, turn out the lights, and get a long overdo fix.
Follow Ups:
The most interesting surprises for me were the excerpts from the Material (Bill Laswell)/William Burroughs album "Seven Souls" played at the beginning of the episode and during the ending credits.Death by hanging, and the subsequent discharge of bodily fluids, was a common theme in some of Burroughs' writing. Coincidence?
d
I generally don't post spoilers for movies so people can have a chance to see them not knowing key elements of the show. Surprise is often a wonderful thing. But TV reviews after the fact have a different standard for me. So if you haven't already, avoid our posts, there's a good surprise or two in store...A solid B, IMHO.
Looks like they(producers) have run out of ideas already, first episode felt disjointed, Sacks in prison, made guy wants out, Christopher looks high, Tony looks the same, doc beginning to look old, same made guy talking to feds, Uncle J is wacko shoots T...hate when they decides to close out a series, remember Oz? THey did a number on that one at closing time...lets hope this was just a nervous tick and some better ideas guide the rest of the remaining episodes.
The producers have done the same thing for the last two or three opening shows. They insist on going over the "what's going on with" every character in the show ad nauseum. I think this kills the momentum of the opening show. But once the preliminaries are out of the way the series picks up nicely. Season six seems to be starting no different. I'm sure everyone noticed that at the end of this show there were no scenes from next week. I guess done to keep you guessing about Tony's condition as if it were a big secret. Tony recovers and Junior's off to the "funny-farm" assisted living facility. Anyone taking bets?
Thats how I see it too, Tony has to recover, and Junior is off to 'assisted living'...I would love to see the series end in an open way, live and let live reality...closure can be over-rated. I have been a fan from day 1, and hope Mr Chase doesn't follow convention...like making the 'bad' guys lose and the 'good' guys win. Yuck. Looking foward to next Sunday...
I tend to agree, but I guess they were setting up all the subplots. I thought the overly drawn-out suicide scene and Tony's closing scene were tedious time killers; bad signs for this season. Lets hope now that the plot threads have been put in place the following episodes will be up to snuff.
Joe,The opening was quite clever, giving away tiny little hints about the future.
The Episode set up many possible endings to the show (which is what it was designed to do), which is why it felt disjointed.
Finn is going to be a problem, especially when he becomes a member of the familia and has to deal with the gay Capo.
Two dead rats in one episode creates all kinds of opportunities for someone else to become a rat.
Ms. "I want to move to Florida" might become a problem.
J. Sack has not vanished yet into the prison system. His wife is gonna become a problem for Carmela.
Hesh is not going to be happy with the deal made about his son in-law.
A.J. is a fucking loser and will do something stupid bringing heat on everyone.
Tony's little talk about "family" being there and not your "friends" was interesting.
Loved the "Paths of Glory" scene at the end.
How fucking stupid did Bobbie look with that train hat?
Tosh
"I think this place is restricted Wang, so don't tell em you're Jewish"
A bit clunky in parts. Tho thats not terribly unusual for the show.Wonderful beginning. What was that song (not the title song) in the opening collage?
Didn't see the shooting at the end coming. Damn near dropped my second margarita.
Nice to see a character wounded in the stomach act like a person wounded in the stomach.
Jenny Sach looks like an F'ing whale.
Loved the bitching at Artie's. I didn't catch the dialogue completely, did one of em say, this bread must be from the bread museum?
Tony on the scales was LOL.
The much hyped following show, Big Love, needs an injection of life. If it turns out its main storyline is one wife bitching about, or at, the other wife, fuggedaboutit.
opening song was WILLIAM s. BURROUGHS spoken word piece.
... recorded with Burroughs.
I haven't seen theepisode but there are several versions of the track in circulation. One is on an album called Seven Souls and is a great CD if you liked the one track.
There is also The Road To The Western Lands, basically a remix album by various people, but I would suggect Seven Souls if you liked the track on the show.
By the way, for the "casual" listener, Material, which is, basically, a vehicle for Bill Laswell, is a very interesting band and a lot of people here would LOVE Hallucination Engine a floaty semi ambient CD from the early 90s featuring a whole load of jazz and "world" musicians.
Hugely fabulous record.
I agree... a fabulous album. It's a must-have for anyone intersted in Bill Laswell's projects. Two other must-haves are Axiom Ambient: Lost in the Translation and Divination: Ambient Dub Volume II, Dead Slow
There's no mistaking a Bill Laswell bass line, is there?
