Japanese film with Italian neo realism and American over the board sentimentality.
The first half is terribly naive, then start a film in the film who is positively boring, and then the last part gets even more sentimental a la la Hollywood plus a zest of Japanese ballet, BUT from time to time shines bright humanistic and wonderful scenes.
For them this film is highly recommended.
This film marks also the end of the collaboration between two great men.
The director K. and his alter ego M.
This film being torn apart I can think why....
Follow Ups:
is cynical. Kurosawa was depicting the lives of men who dedicated themselves to helping the poorest among them--- at significant personal risk.
It is beautifully paced, shot, edited, and acted. Almost the perfect film.
See it with an open heart and you will become a better person.
"Hollywood?!!"
Well, some tinseltown efforts are wonderful, too.
No logical.
The two third of the film are just a mish-mash. A film in film.
Cronin wrote some nice stories too.
I mean on this theme, like " La Citadelle ".
threads that run throughout the film.
Just one: the maturing of the young, selfish doctor. Of course it's not an original plot point but it eloquently is told.
Well I just bought it on your recommendation! And I had it seen a long time ago.
No, the film is very uneven.
Sometimes very superficial, and too " theatral.."
But as I said in the third part it is redemption....
In the end not a good film, but one who is worth to see.
the woman... and the tension cleverly built in her scene with the young doctor.
How about the ensemble? The cooks are brilliant, almost Shakespearean relief. Mifune is brilliant, however, and carries the film. In a Hollywood "factory" film, he'd have many lecture type scenes, extolling the virtues of helping your fellow man. Mifune/Kurosawa don't need that. They have other actors make a few comments and then SHOW you how the doctor earned respect. I especially liked the wonderful scene where Mifune/Kurosawa showed good men needn't be wimps. It was a hilarious nod to Mifune's samurai past and an obvious wink at the audience.
A brilliant film about a very serious topic: what's more important than one man helping another, unselfishly?
No, no too many scenes are just childish, a little bit like in old cowboys films the men got along, nothing better than men friendship....That is what I call naive, and then the plot...
The young doc who is born with a golden spoon, and now is making crisis...
No, no, that was not the standard of K.
Yes the cooks look & smell like Shakespear.
Which women? Ha, there are so many. That is what I critic, two many stories in only one film.
I can imagine why M/ K had their last effort together here.
sdf
I dunno, but after this film they never did one more.
I will have to check that out.
Patrick,Criterion just released "The Bad Sleep Well".
Much more enjoyable film with Mifune showing a different side.
Samurai Rebellion (although not a Kurosawa) is also very good.Tosh
"I think this place is restricted Wang, so don't tell em you're Jewish"
