Well I just bought it on your recommendation! And I had it seen a long time ago.
No, the film is very uneven.
Sometimes very superficial, and too " theatral.."
But as I said in the third part it is redemption....
In the end not a good film, but one who is worth to see.

How about the ensemble? The cooks are brilliant, almost Shakespearean relief. Mifune is brilliant, however, and carries the film. In a Hollywood "factory" film, he'd have many lecture type scenes, extolling the virtues of helping your fellow man. Mifune/Kurosawa don't need that. They have other actors make a few comments and then SHOW you how the doctor earned respect. I especially liked the wonderful scene where Mifune/Kurosawa showed good men needn't be wimps. It was a hilarious nod to Mifune's samurai past and an obvious wink at the audience.
A brilliant film about a very serious topic: what's more important than one man helping another, unselfishly?

  No, no too many scenes are just childish, a little bit like in old cowboys films the men got along, nothing better than men friendship....That is what I call naive, and then the plot...

      I dunno, but after this film they never did one more.
      I will have to check that out.
