In this clasic 1948 film noir, John Garfield stars as an attorney trying to consolidate 13 competing numbers rackets to promote greater efficiency and profits. He is at odds with Edmund O'Brien, his older brother, who runs one of the smaller operations. I have always been impressed with the dialog and narration and feel that some of it approaches poetry. Recommended.
