I've always been annoyed with the music in most movies attempting to "set the mood." For this film, I loved every second of it. It was unique and nearly seemless with the visuals. The last 5-10 minutes made me a little jittery, "Will he or won't he? Will he get away?"
The kid was great "I FELL DOWN IN THE STREET!"
It's a rather cold and clear reflection of life, crime (petty as it is in this case), and justice.
What was that "mozzarella on bread" anyway? Looked like it was battered or bread-crumbed and deep fried. For some reason it gave me a craving for it.....
Follow Ups:

I'd recommend Tokyo Story for a similar theme and era ( and quality of film )Equivalent Postwar UK films are conspicuous by their absence... yet England endured rationing, privation and austerity until the mid 1950's
No wonder people emigrated in droves
