I rented it from Blockbuster last night. It didn't move me as much as it did you but it was very worthwhile. The comparison to the Dutch "Vanishing" is appropriate other than that movie was more creepy.I have watched Asian movies for some time so the tone was not surprising to me. The sensibilities of Asian movies always seem a bit out of whack. This movie is based upon true events. There are many details which do not have the impact that they would to a Korean (the air-raid practice and preparation for civil defense along with the demonstrations) which are used as a backdrop.
The investigating officers are at once sympathetic, pathetic, brutal, stupid and funny. What was most interesting about the movie was the lack (until close to the end) of the killer's point of view. That is standard in American movies and I think the reason this movie could be so frustrating. It puts you in the point of view of the detectives and keeps you there which feels very restricting and frustrating.
So while I am not going to rave about this movie as you did, it was quite interesting and a very worthy watch.
Follow Ups:
the principal actors (all three detectives) to be superb, especially the rural lead one. I was disturbed and angered by the final scene, being unprepared for it being used as I am to Hollywood or more conventional films.
