In Reply to: Paradise now finally opens in Britain, why the fuss from US/Israeli propagandists? And why not about Syriana? posted by dave c on April 14, 2006 at 14:23:44:
There's nothing new happening except that Paradise Now is trying to show both faces of the coin. What I found really great about this movie is the contrast between 2 Palestinian ideologies. One that is intent on using violence to solve and end occupation , the other to deal with Israeli occupation in a more civilized way with the notion that violence only begets more violence. I favour the latter, especially when this violence is targeted against ordinary and innocent civilians. You also get to know that the father of one of the guys was a traitor, having been an informant helping the Israelis. As a contrast, you also know the girl's father was a local hero. Despite this, the girl was still against violence and is always opting for peaceful ways.
There are supporters from both camps who want this dilema solved peacefully. Mutual trust is mandatory between both parties and until this happens, we may see more violence and more innocent blood shed from both sides. However, I'm very optimistic this will eventually see the light of day.
I enjoyed the movie a lot. I think it was also very moving. The dialogue was simple yet great. I see see no reason why the pro Zionists should be against it, this is the stark reality in Palestine
and could remain so unless both parties are really willing to sit down and solve their differences.Easier said than done ? maybe and maybe not.

If you look at recent news, you will discover that the current Palestinian "government", lead by a terrorist HAMAS group, still refuses to drop its goal of destruction of Israel.
Your arguement always leaves out the fact that the Palestinians had the state of Israel inflicted on them by force.
The ISraelis were terrorists back then including many who have been in parliament mutilating the bodies of British soldiers.
The trouble now, as in Ireland is that one side is constantly being told not to use violence whilst wanting change and the other side wants no change while having the military back-up to use extreme violence.
If the Palestinians (or simply the non-Jewish portion of the Israeli population) were actually treated as equal citizens then as they become the majority the mmm Jewish government would be voted out.
There should really be no more place for a simplistic religious based government here than for the fundamentalist governments that we have seen in the case of Afghanistan.
These abhorent hate and ignorance filled organisations will hopefully disappear in time.
You obviously know about nothing about Israel.***If the Palestinians (or simply the non-Jewish portion of the Israeli population) were actually treated as equal citizens then as they become the majority the mmm Jewish government would be voted out.
Everyone living in Israel enjoys equal rights.
Democracy is a bitch
Does everyone have the Israeli military using helicopters and fighters to bomb and rocket them and have bulldozers demolishing their houses and their political leaders beseiged by the ISraeli army?
Unless you are a madman you will have to know the truth...
Yes and much to my dismay. Israel has recently made great positive moves towards a peace realization in the region and if Hamas or any other Palestinian government will not reciprocate then I guess they will deserve what's coming to them. I'm not anti-semitic and do strongly believe in Israel's rights to safe and peaceful co-existence with the Palestinians.I also believe that 'Paradise Now' was trying to convey a similar message through the character of 'Suha' (Lubna Azabal)in the movie, while still depicting the sore reality nonetheless.

It is cute to talk about "occupation" without saying anything about how the current positioning came about... as some of us know, it was just the defensive move on part of Israel, in response to an open agression aimed at destruction of the state of Israel and all Jews living there. Until that time Israel had no desire (still has none) of invading the WB or Gaza.A minor detail... to some here.
So a far better analogy would perhaps be a conflict between a Nazi war criminal and an allied soldier liberating Europe in 1945. Without knowing the roots of the conflict, it is easy to become a prey to a dishonest story teller showing the difficult life of the Nazi guy in prison.
But that is the beauty of relativist thinking - to concentrate on details while ignoring the whole.
