Freddie Young's spectacular cinematography is a standout here in this WW I era tale of a young married woman's affair with a british officer and the repercussions it has for her and the village she lives in. A sub plot involves the smuggling in of German arms and ammunition to foment the coming uprising. Davis Lean directed in what is probably the weakest of his later films. I have always fekt that despite his noble effort here Robert mitchum was miscast as the cuckoleded schoolteacher. The directional dialog is impressive. John Mills won an oscar for his performance of a "slow" mute. Christopher Jnes clearly cannot act.
Follow Ups:
for dubious casting and disparate performancesIt's a shame; "Ryan" could very easily have been a classic ( as could have "Glory" )
