John Sayles directed this redemptive tale of a former soap opera star (ary McDonnell) who has returned to her Louisiana home after being stuck by a New York taxi and rendered a paraplegic. Her sttitude is very bitter and she goes through a succession of caretakers until Alfrie Woodard arrives on the scene, determined to keep the job. Slowly a bond develops between the two, as a succession of local characters flow in and out of the story. The talented David Strathern plays a local bayou guide who once had a crush on McDonnell and still does. Heartwarming and gentle in tone and very well acted.
Follow Ups:
My favorite line from Passionfish is when McDonell asks her caretaker if they (I forget who) called her a "bitch" and Alfrie Woodward replies "on wheels". Very well written dialogue and one of John Sayles best movies IMO.
the almost unknown but equally good "Men With Guns."
underated GOOD movie!
seen "Men With Guns," run and get it.
