"Silencer" is a misnomer. They're actually called "suppressors." Although they do quiet the sound of a gun they're still louder than hollywood depicts. The suppressor for a .45 is much bigger than hollywood depicts. Picture a cylinder roughly 3" wide by about 12" long. They do work on a .45 because those cartridges go slower than the speed of sound. Also they rob all of the energy required to cycle the weapon thus rendering the pistol a single shot weapon. That's hollywood for you. At least you don't see suppressors on revolvers anymore. Those wouldn't work at all due to the gap between the cylinder and the barrel where gas escapes at supersonic speeds. They don't really work on rifles either because most rifle bullets travel at supersonic speeds.
