Duncan, the man! When, some while back, I purchased my code-free DVD player online,
or my all-region DVD player as you prefer, I envisioned the
subsequent purchase of a festering list of titles, mostly French,
that I had hitherto been unable to catch up with on the big screen
or via VHS video and American-manufactured DVDs. Naturally I had
not bothered beforehand to research the practicability of the plan,
and I soon became disenchanted at the number of title searches on
French Amazon (amazon.fr) which came up empty. I had just assumed
that the Frenchman's pride in his cultural heritage ensured that
things like Yves Allégret's Une Si Jolie Petite Plage, Georges
Franju's Pleins Feux sur l'Assassin, André Delvaux's Un Soir un
Train, and Jacques Demy's Trois Places pour le 26 would have been
preserved posthaste on DVD, even if without English subtitles,
exclusively for the French market. I seemed to have been sorely
mistaken.
Follow Ups:
Do you have any issues with PAL vs NTSC on a region-free player? That is something I have wondered about...
Some convert PAL-> NTSC better than others, but you'll still have the 4% speed difference.
Jack
If the source is European it will play at the same rate as on a European television, and I assume that would be the correct speed in which the material was originally shot (let's not even get into pre-sound era material; silent film is a horse of an entirely different color when discussing FPS and PAL/NTSC speed differences).I was under the impression that the 4% timing issue arises when PAL displayed programming has been converted from what was originally an NTSC source, not when PAL programming is upconverted and displayed over an NTSC format monitor or projector; please correct me if I'm in error here. I haven't noticed any "sped-up" PAL material over my system, but then again, maybe it isn't a big enough issue to be noticeble in most cases.
BTW Jack, don't you own an Oppo?
Yes, I have the Oppo.
As I understand it, PAL discs, regardless of source when converted to NTSC will be sped up by 4%. Upconverting has nothing to do with it.
Its really not that noticable, except sometimes in the music-pitch is higher. I have the UK (R2PAL) version of the first season of Battlestar Galactica and the female vocals(not on the US version until second season) are slightly but noticably higher. I'm not all that bothered by it, and don't have alot of PAL discs anyway, but I have talked to other people who are sensative to it. Some complain about pitch, others complain about things like flames flickering too fast, etc.

The Oppo OPDV971H has supurb digital conversion, Faroudja processing and Oppo's customer/product support is hard to beat. BTW, the Oppo's PAL/NTSC conversion is so good that after setting the region code to "0" (which is a simple menu assisted process) all regions will look stunning, especially from the DVI output!> > > "Do you have any issues with PAL vs NTSC on a region-free player?" < < <
Unless you're refering to more abstract issues, such as which brand of Grey Poupon Clark, Victor and patrick prefer or whether certain international DVDs are kosher (grin), this link should answer all your questions:
As an ex-optical/digital engineer myself, I know that the conversion is no simple matter and any particular realization will be subject to numerous whims.Suggest you google, and I'll ask a couple of knowledgeable friends.
Let's each of us post any results here.
But people in France like in your country eat and love shit.
You may find in America more French titles ( the good one ) than in France, in the Criterion collection.
Terrible is it not?Try this two links. You may find some real good titles.

We have better beers too! (And, worse...)But thanks for the insight, it truly is terrible.
No! No better beers but just as bad.
Germany and of course Tchechen republic has the one to die for...
...the stuff available Stateside in the last seven years or so has not been good, even on draft. It once was magnifique!, but I understand the factory converted from the old-fashioned Communist wood vats to the modern capitalist stainless steel and glass, thereby ruining the flavor.
Yes, still good enough...But my favourit is the Budweiser, for the last three years.
But sorry we just drank a bottle Nuit S. Georges 1999...And...Well, a freind is coming soon for another bottle and..Ups...
Santé, Clark...

But I would have love to have a nice chat with every one, helas...
The " Grey Poupon " mustard was an allusion to me.
So...
...are a bit more democratic. Victor and Clark are always welcome to join you on that petard; the three of you might even be able to hoist it more easily working in sync. ;^)
After you calling me 1000x+ that way I thought it was my exclusivity...Sorry for being that pretentious...
