This movie may take it's place in my Top Ten of All Time! It had everything - excellent acting, very good story line (some may call it schmaltzy, I like to think of it as sentimental), and magnificent cinematography. I was totally enthralled for 2+ hours. If this doesn't win an Academy Award, for the above-mentioned cinematography, then the voting is rigged!! And this coming from a fan of film noir, not really that big into action movies. No matter what your preferences, I urge you to see this one.

Can't agree with you on this one. Yes, some spectacular stunts...but VERY predictable and, in great Hollywood tradition(despite being of New Zealand orgin) made absolutely no sense. The plot was simply written around a bunch of stunts.Doug Schneider

Battleground, Sands of Iwo Jima, The Longest Day, etc....We knew the Allies would win WWII. Predictability need not be a deterrent to a good, or even great, movie.Oh yeh, Titanic was predictable too! I think we all knew even before entering the theater she would go down.
Besides the story, by predictable I mean that it relied on some many standard plot elements:-- the old mystic (Scott Glenn)
-- disposable characters that serve no purpose than to get taken out with nifty special effects and death scenes
-- the main character (Chris O'Donnell) has ghosts that haunt him (the circumstances of his father's death) that will play a key role at the end of the film.
....and on and on. My point is that although the effects were good, in terms of a story, characters, etc. there is nothing here that has not been done hundreds of times before.

You are describing probably 98% of all movies made. The other 2% are either classics or too dull to sit through.Moral: Enjoy things for what they are.
You're right - 98% of the movies we do see are re-hashed garbage. However, that doesn't mean we have to take it. We *can* ask for something more! Notice how refreshing it is when something intelligent and original comes out! Easier said than done, though.Doug Schneider

Didn't look bad! (It was in the base camp scenes, no CG. OTOH, Grinch looked terrible. OTOH, Cast Away looked very, very good.I love multis. Five minutes of any movie tell a lot more than any previews.

...but I wonder why one would choose to rescue people with explosives, especially highly unstable ones. I mean, it's bad enough that these guys have to speed-climb the world's most dangerous mountain. But now they have to carry nitroglycerin on their backs. Why not add some killer bee hives, and syringe needles with Ebola and curare, and stonefish? Also, the commandant at base camp has his office a "safe" 30 foot distance from his explosives depot...NOT! There is a chemical storage shed for our labs at my job, but it is a good 250 meters away from any occupied space, for good reason. Bah, Humbug! At least it was better than "Mission To Mars."
My father was an ordinance and explosives expert in the Marine Corps; he always said that, properly handled, nitroglycerin wasn't as touchy as its always portrayed. The problem is that nitro vapor is highly unstable, but the liquid isn't. The trick is to completely submerge your jar or bottle in the nitroglycerin and cap it "underwater" so there was no air pocket in the container. According to him, a completely filled bottle of nitro was no more dangerous than a can of soda.

Right, they should have ordered more suitable explosives on-line and had them delivered by UPS! Whoooops...KABOOOM!!! What are all those little green things flying around?
