Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler wrote this screenplay based on the celebrated novel by James M. Cain. Crack insurance salesman Fred McMurray is instantly smitten by Barabara Stanwick, who seduces him inro a complex murder plot to get rid os her husband. After the murder and unbeknownst to McMurray Stanwick takes up with her step daughter's former boyfriend. Meanwhile, insurance claims executive Edward G. Robionson thinks something is fishy about the supposed "accident". Told in flasback narration by McMurray, similar to the weay we learn the story in "Sunset Boulevard" six years later. A classic that never disapoints and highly recommended.
Tunesmiths may note that a song on the radiop, "Tangerine", was not written until 1942 although the story takes place in 1938.
Follow Ups:
Saw it on the "big" screen at the LaSalle bank last year. My GF was only familiar with the latter day Stanwick. A real eye opener for her.Holds up great even with repeat viewings. The tension just builds until you almost crack. One of my favorite Ed G. roles too.
is 100 tightly wound pages. This is one of those rare cases where you can read the book is about as much time as seeing the movie. And it is a great great read- I pick it up every few years and read it again. From what I remember, Camus cited it as a big influence on The Stranger.
Author James M. Cain later admitted that if he had come up with some of the solutions to the plot that screenwriters Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler created, he would have employed them in his original novel.
Now Raymond Chandler is great in his own right. And some other James M. Cain novels could probably be changed for the better. But Double Indemnity in damn near perfect as written. Plot aside, it's pure style and darkness.
she appeared a bit... "diesel-ish" will be shocked at what a babe she is, sizzling with sensuality. That ankle bracelet is unforgettable.
The Big Valley and The Thorn Birds with Rachel Ward who was and is HOT!!!
bleep
I agree but both she abd some studio execs hated the wig she wore. One exec even quipped, "We hired Barbara Stanwick and we got George Washington".
Funny. Martha Washington was rumored to have said "I intended to marry Barbara Stanwick and discovered I married George Washington."
