is 100 tightly wound pages. This is one of those rare cases where you can read the book is about as much time as seeing the movie. And it is a great great read- I pick it up every few years and read it again. From what I remember, Camus cited it as a big influence on The Stranger.

Author James M. Cain later admitted that if he had come up with some of the solutions to the plot that screenwriters Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler created, he would have employed them in his original novel.
Now Raymond Chandler is great in his own right. And some other James M. Cain novels could probably be changed for the better. But Double Indemnity in damn near perfect as written. Plot aside, it's pure style and darkness.
