Author James M. Cain later admitted that if he had come up with some of the solutions to the plot that screenwriters Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler created, he would have employed them in his original novel.

Now Raymond Chandler is great in his own right. And some other James M. Cain novels could probably be changed for the better. But Double Indemnity in damn near perfect as written. Plot aside, it's pure style and darkness.
