When this film was released it did only m,odestly at the box office but has turned out to be the most renated in its video incarnations. Most are familiar with the story of how falsely convicted banker Tim Robbins beforeinds lifer Morgan Freeman and subtley changes many things in prison, finally escaping after many years of incarceration. Particularly moving is a scene where newly released James whitmore tries to make a go of it on the outside. This one stands up to repeated viewings.

Ex nihilo, nihil fit . . .
one of the few films that manages to have a wide appeal and still be thoughtful and deeply affecting even for those who have seen every trick in the book. One for the ages.
A film that as you said, growns on you, the more you see it, the better.
A great TR and an excellent fim.
Probably the best Steven King adaptation, not including The Shining, which wasn't a very faithful screenplay. I think it was much better than Forrest Gump, which took the oscar that year.
