The comment you cite never struck me as odd. Yes, the parents were abusive, but that does not necessarily mean the daughters had to kill themselves. The parents were partly to blame, but there were likely other alternatives.

BTW, it is an interesting movie for people to see and a great first effort from Sophia Coppola.
