The critics who saw the pre-Canne screening seem unanimously unimpressed. Apparently its pretty dull and plodding and Hanks' performance is being panned. Isn't that always the way for films made from hugely popular books?

My wife and I will probably contribute to Opie's retirement fund this weekend (we try to catch event movies of major literary works regardless of the negative press).I won't prejudge the film, but I have to agree that the consensus so far isn't very promising; we'll see.
Sales event, yes. Promotional success, yes. Literary, emphatically no!

Ex nihilo, nihil fit . . .
;^D
***we try to catch event movies of major literary works regardless of the negative pressPlease elucidate... exactly WHAT ***major literary work*** are you talking about here?
You can't possibly mean one of the most boring books of the decade... or...
It's considered by most folks as a major work of literary fiction.
And not just a "work" - a "literary" one, for Pete's sake!Do you think it will beat LoTR? Naah!

This is pure kaka... "most folks" do not even read. How lucky for you!

I am really not that inclined to spend my time discussing that marvel. Wasting several hours to get through it was painful enough.
There's a lot of "history" covered in the book, which would be hard to condense into a watchable movie, IMHO. Nobody wants to sit through a 2+ hour lecture on medieval conspiracy theories, especially if there's bad acting involved. I saw a special "preview" clip the other night, and it was rather boring---it probably doesn't help that you already know what happens, too.As for your theory on popular books, "Midnight In The Garden Of Good & Evil" suffered the same fate. That film was a snore.

........ BTW I believe the author of MITGOGAE recently released his 2nd book.
