I took the whole family to see it Christmas Day.We were all, to varying degrees, underwhelmed. Some were even bored.
Reactions, anyone?

Follow Ups:
Cast Away is a good film but not Oscar-worthy...not even for Hanks(Who I like a lot). Critics have blasted the ending but if they ended it the feelgood way it still would have been blasted. I would give this a B.
must have a group of people cheering the hero. That is the standard Hollywood finale. I read a review once about the cheering style and they named 50 or so movies. It never occured to me how many movies are self basting. The reviewer was commenting how people don't cheer at the end of movies anymore and producers realized if the movie cheers itself the partons get the same feeling. A psychological ploy. My wife and I laugh now whenever we see a self basting movie.P
Otherwise, I thought it average.I did like the interesting touch of the blood-smeared volleyball named Wilson.
Although there were a few flaws ,especially as it neared the end, I thoroughly enjoyed this flick. Highly recommended.
I think the producer should have been brave enough to explore the sexual relationship with Wilson.
I saw it last night. I would not call it a blockbuster but I would also not pan it. Say three stars of four. I agree the director did not put the usual and expected scenes, such as TH getting the girl in the end, or a shark fight somewhere, or more tension in the lobby with the husband. But you are missing the point. The director is comparing our inability to effectively interact in a lush society with TH's ability to survive in a desolate one. That was the message in all the interactions from the very beginning. We struggle with, and don't value, the simplest of interactions. TH's inability to talk to his friend about his dying wife in the beginning and being able to look him in the eye are say "I am sorry I was not there for you" in the end. The party in the hotel room where they served sushi and crab; the inability of the guests to empathize with TH. The girl at the end was the answer to "you never know what might blow ashore". TH did not have to pursue her, her mere wispy entrance and exit proved the point. Just like not showing us what was in the package. It was the package, not the contents that saved his life.
One interesting point is in the length of time it took TH to leave. Five years to determine it was better to risk one's life than to miss life. I wonder how long it would take me, hopefully not five years. Sitting here at my computer with a bottle of water and a phone, I think it would take me about six months. But then I would have died because I would not have been in tune with the winds.
I agree I expected a better film than I got. And many of the messages were not subtle enough, kind of in your face. Not as bad as U571, but similar in that they made a clear list of points and then answered them. But the message was clear and the protagonists conversion successful.
I think I will go get a chocolate . . .

Yes! Took my family on Christmas Day also. Excactly the same reaction! Lousy film.D.C.E.
then the story quickly loses "strength of conviction" or whatever and gets boring. What a life changing event, and what a wimpy, white-boy-middle-class-emotionally-underwhelmed response.
Didn't even play off any of the tensions between the husband and TH.
Didn't even do the "expected" thing of TH getting the sculptor girl in the end.
Definitely a two star (out of four) movie.
