This is a straight forward telling of the evnts leading up to Lindberg's historic 1927 crossing of the Atlantic plus the flight itself. It of course does not get into his politics or his romance. Jimmy Stewart is well cast here and conveys a sense of what Lucky Lindy was like. The aerial sequences are well done and the early Cinemascope cinematography is well composed. Billy Wilder contributed to the screenplay ans also directed. Franz Waxman did the score. Fun and good history for young people.
Follow Ups:
Having flown small aircraft I love watching this movie when ever it comes on. Sadly, as already mentioned, Lindbergh had some very controversial ideas and I'm afraid that for me they taint the memory of his monumental accomplishment.
Too bad that none of his racisitic views were exposed, as for his bigamy that came much later...
I absolutely loved this film, even though (I think) the charming Stewart was 20 years too old for the part. Did some of the music (hear the violins) cues for the transatlantic flight remind you of Respighi's "Three Botticelli Pictures?"
really added a level of emotion to it.
I disn't catch that but next time through (10 years from now?) I will try to remember to listen for that.
