Poor Sofia...Her film seems not to have found any grace on critic´s eyes at the cannes festival.
As I did understand, her story is a mix of back then with today, more of a fable...
The tenor was: BORING.
I hope it is untrue.
Follow Ups:
It looked fabulous! Beautifully filmed, art decoration, costumes, and this damned modern, contemporary soundtrack! Now, the soundtrack on teasers and previews don't neccessarily mean anything but I got the feeling there was something "modern" about it. The teaser showed an unclothed Dunst flirting with a fan in her boudoir with Louis nowhere in sight. The odd thing is Jason Schwartzman playing Louis.
SC is too smart for wanting to make just a " costume " film. It has to be something smarter.
We shall see.
From what I read in the newspaper at lunch this afternoon, the largely French audience was prepared not to like the film. Apparently, Coppola's source for the film was a 2002 book, which, I understand, the French regard as being a revisionist account. Apparently, they believe the film must be likewise.
I just read some critics on the French net and...They are very good. One french guy who saw SC at the scene directing the film wrote she was the kindest person ever....
I dunno. As her father is in France an idol. I read this story too. Anyway we are like to make our own opinion.
And I must mine is a little biased, I like her, so I will start to see it with a cetain degree of optimism.
We shall see.
***I like herBy "her" do you mean Sofia, Dunst or Maria?
OK, OK, don't tell us, you old goat... you mean all of them!
Now get ready fot Auph, his faux leather pants full of proletarian angst!
..I guess the critics had to shoot this one down.
It's showing here and I definately go see it, she has a lot of talent, IMHO. Dunst is good also.
I will too. No way to miss it. I am only afraid that it could be boring...I read the synopis in a French mag and now in a German one...
It is a work that pass above the heads of some or it is really dull.
We will see.
I think I will still give it a chance, so perhaps Analog Scott will stop frowning at me, as I have soft spot for Sofia - my wife hates her, but she also dislikes Scarlett (to which I am ambivalent...) - but she had been able to produce something above the average, and that is not too bad for an inexperienced director, even if not too young already (she's 35). She has an intelligient woman's touch, and I still wish her luck.I should have thought of that weeks ago when I was in Russia - I suspect the copies are already being sold there.
So do I.
She seems to have spend too much money on the decor, as renting in France cost you a fortune, imagine Versailles, and all the rest of the location.
maybe it was TOO big for her?
She may be at best on a small scale...
We will see.
"I think I will still give it a chance, so perhaps Analog Scott will stop frowning at me,"
I'm not frowning on you Victor. you were quite civil in our last exchange. that's all I ever hope from anybody on any forum. I hope for the best for this picture as well. A friend of mine is in it.
"I should have thought of that weeks ago when I was in Russia - I suspect the copies are already being sold there."
Say it isn't so! You aren't buying bootlegs are you? Now I may have to frown.
:-)
