I anticipate this film will be hated by many people who hold the comics in high regard. Not being an X-Men aficionado I watched this purely as a movie, and liked it.
I am not looking for great characterisation or a deep story in this sort of film. What I want is entertainment, and an internally consistent logic, especially motivation - which I think this provides. In addition there are is a storyline that does point at some real moral dilemmas.
On of the things I like about this series of films is that there are enough characters that you CAN actually kill some off. This adds some real tension, that is missing from films such as Spiderman, Batman, Superman et al.
This is where the X-Men comic lovers I am sure will take exception. Undoubtedly some of the plot decisions taken in this film will cut across well loved character arcs.
My eldest daughter (15) has read a number of the X-Men comics. She did object to some of the choices made but still enjoyed the movie.
I had concerns at the appointment of Ratner, but I must say I think he has done a good job; especially in view of the constraints placed upon him by the studio.
Worth a watch.
Follow Ups:
I liked X-Men 3 fine and rate it close to the 2nd X-Men with the 1st being the best. I usually think the first film in any series is the best and maybe this is because they have more character development. It is a little sad when they kill off characters in the 3rd film but it is a good thing that I care about the characters to begin with! If you like the series do not miss it at the theater.
A servicable summer popcorn flick, reasonably good fun. Not as good as the first 2, obviously, but as you noted, Ratner didn't drop the ball.Bring on Superman Returns! For me, the most eagerly anticipated film of the summer.
......:-)
Saw the first two.
Those were OK.
This one's a dog.
Woof.

Ratner didn't do a horrible job with it, but it was too short, lacking in depth, and had an ending that made zero sense. The "special" scene at the end wasn't that hard to predict.Kelsey Grammer was superb as Beast. The best job of any actor in the series.
I think Ratner introduced too many new characters without any explanation and left many such as Nightcrawler out. Angel was a total waste.
Watching Famke Jansen and Halle Berry more than made up for having to deal with 1,000 unruly teens screaming at every opportunity.
It was the worst of the 3, but it will make $400 million easy.

Clark,I'm lucky to have a cool wife who will let me go to a movie at midnight with my friends.
I walked in the door at 2:15am, only to hear my daughter crying for me.
No sleep for me.
These kids in the theater were really obnoxious. I told one to shut up or I'd call his parents and let them know he was a little prick.
It worked.
