Burt lancaster gets top billing in this sanitized film version of James Jones' celebrated novel. The story is about Army life in Hawai just before the Pearl Harbor attack which ends the story. Lancaster plays a top sargeant who has an affair with his lieutenant's wife, Deborah Kerr. Frank Sinatra and Montgomery Clift are privates and friends, Clift a talented bugler who refuses to join the Company boxing team even though he is a talented fighter (he killed a man in the ring). Clift becomes enamored of "party girl" Donna Reed (miscast, IMHO). Sinatra angers bully Ernest Borgnine, with tragic results. The film is famous for an epic clinch in the poundimg surf by Lancaster and Kerr.
Follow Ups:
for that role. BTW, Sinatra, imo, was ridiculous as Maggio, but then he was ridiculous in nearly his film roles.
If memory serves correct, this film is the one that revitalized Frank's career(won AA Best Supporting Actor) from sagging music idol to viable actor. His wife, Ava Gardner, supposedly talked to one of company executives and secured that role for him. Lucky Frank! ~AH

Yes, and I believe that the story was thinly disguised in "The godfather".
