It was I must admit, the first time I have seen it. What a great
film. The photography, sets, lighting, costumes, cast were all near perfection. I find many of the 30's,40's era films don't hold up well for me. I find the acting in many "classic" films to be dated and come off hokey by modern standards. Not so in this at all. The last 40 seconds on the balcony could have been cut as far as I am concerned and there was an exterior scene around the Crown Jewel display where an unusual shot was done to a slightly jerky rear screen projection. Other than that it was near perfection. What a woman Bergman was,not to mention the young Angela Landsbery.Anybody else been "surprised" by a classic film they had somehow missed seeing ?

***Anybody else been "surprised" by a classic film they had somehow missed seeing ?In a way - yes and no. I am not surprised at the general quality of many of the old films. What they lack in strictly technical areas they often more than compensate for in artistic aspects. You see much more of the raw performance.
But what does surprise me is the wealth of what was produced and is available in what we can call either old or classic, depending upon your view. There are still thousands of great old movies that I have not seen. Too bad many of them I can't even get here. It is hard to get works by the classic European greats, unfortunately. But on the positive side, this is the area where the American cinema had produced mountains of wonderful films. Too bad they have lost their touch later.
