This is not one of Clint Eastwood's better films. He plays a hard boiled Marine gunnery sargent assigned to shape up a group of misfits and turn them into a fighting unit. His superior has never seen combat while Eastwood has been in the Korean War and done three tours in Nam. The movie ends with the invasion of Greneda. Along the way we see the usual training clioches and a fair number of barroon fist fights. "full Metal Jacket" and "Jarhead" are much better films about the Marine Corps.
Follow Ups:
It was OK for watching during a Saturday afternoon with nothing to do, but I thought it was semi realistic and really kinda weird. The "misfits" would not have been allowed to stay in the USMC nevermind even dreaming about assaulting a senior NCO. That $#!t gets you thrown in the brig.
This is one of my favorite Eastwood movies. It's easy to watch because it's not so serious. I liked the performances of Mario Van Peebles and Marsha Mason a lot. Having been in the service I knew way too many a-holes like "Major Powers" (played nicely by Everett McGill). I thought it was a nice film.
