"The spectrum of movies available on the big screen grows ever narrower and narrower. The big screen is for big audiences, the little for little. In that respect, the great blessing of DVDs is also the great curse of DVDs."
Follow Ups:
And still the biggest problems with dvd's is that they are not worth the material they are made with. What junk they are selling these days. Even after 2 viewings, some of my dvd's are starting to have digital breakdowns. The industry bitches they are getting ripped off by copy cats and yet they refuse to do anything about ripping off the consumer with their junk materials they use to make dvd's.
...shouldn't we also have heard of CDs breaking down after several plays?
The pathology of films over the years is documented. While cause and effect can be argued at least there is actual figures out there upon which one could make an argument. You have to really know what is going on before you can begin to lament it.
There is no question it is happening, but without a doubt commiserating among the likely-minded ain't gonna change it one iota, so why even bother? The enemy is US, and it is US who is not spending our money on those films... but I am repeating the long-known fact.Water under the bridge... like so many other things in life.
But much more to the point... why would he watch it on a small screen in his living room? Surely there is something in between, or he simply wished to make it as painful as possible, now that he could not get what he really wanted?
Why not bridge the gap and buy that 80" projector screen? Not as good as the movie theater, I will grant you that... but a WHOLE lot better than that "small screen".

Do you have any view on the important one?
...they don't a theatre make. It's not all about size, Victor.
Since I got my projector I have a much harder time justifying going out to see a movie. It's just so much easier to enjoy it at home. And while my audio set-up is still a work in progress, it can handle the job better than most cinemas.

I didn't say they were theaters, I said one could do a whole lot better than watch on a small screen, and in particular a reviwer!
