Given that Woody Allen does not care for the country he has done an amazing job here joining Mendelssohn's music with Gordon Willis' lush cinematography to effect an homage to country life early in the 20th century. The cast is simply superb and the various lusts and couplings very well written and humorous. Jose Ferrer is very convincing as the pompous professor, Leopold. Mia Farrow appears in her first Woody film in a part originally wrotten for Diane Keaton. This is also the first time Allen appears as part of an ensemble cast in one of his films (prior to that he was either the main character or not in the film at all). A wonderful gem, worth watching again and again.
Follow Ups:
I have shown this many times with people who come over for a visit and want to see something different. Many people have enjoyed this film through the years, I remember watching it at the theater when I was in my early 20's, I even had to get the soundtrack. Even if you don't like Woody Allen or his movies, you will like this one.
