Admittedly I'm old school when it comes to this, but I firmly believe that besides quieting your cell phone, one should turn it off. But the pre movie warnings only ask that moviegoers quiet their phones, not turn them off. It's irritating as hell to see that bright light right in front of you and someone pecking over their keys sending a text message or reading a message and passing it around to friends. Just damn rude and inconsiderate to me. And if you're waiting on a message that's so %^$#ing important that you don't care if you interrupt your viewing or someone else's viewing of the movie, don't be at the movie then. This came to a head today when our daughter (age 26) took two messages at a movie she went to see with us on Father's Day. She got a good shsssing from me and I got the expected, eat crapola look. Didn't discuss it afterwards.
FWIW, we were at The Omen (a compromise choice). Very average, about 1/2 star lower than the original. Its worth no more elaboration. An unnecessary almost note for note remake that added nothing to the original. Blah, yawn, Zzzzzzzz.
Follow Ups:
Like many in this thread, I'm old school (born in '53). I still don't own a cell phone, but I do use the one work provides (to stay in touch with doctor, when rounding in various hospitals, etc.).I agree that it is distracting to have people "lighting up" their cell phones in a darkened movie theater. I actually sat once by a Oriental chick who put her sweater over her head and talked on her cell phone during the movie! By the way, sweaters aren't sound proof.
Let's go one step further. I've been in Borders or B&N, and someone takes a cell phone call and walks around yakking on their phone in a loud voice. No, this isn't a library, but many customers are there to read magazines, check out books, etc. Please, take your cell phone outside!
Drivers talking on any type of phone (even speaker phones) are four times more likely to have an auto accident than "phone less" drivers.
Many countries have banned cell phone use in cars, except in emergencies. Why can't we do that in U.S.? Cell phone lobbyists, I suppose.

...while shopping in the grocery store who can't steer their carts straight.Lord knows what they do behind the wheel of the car...
I go to the cinema now, in my forties, than I have ever done; despite that fact that I've got a first rate AV system. I love the big screen experience. However, the inability of people to behave in a civilised fashion does make me question this on occasion.Perhaps we should all write to the main chains and ask for cell phone jammers to be installed in all their venues!
into the art theaters like Magnolia and Angelica. A little, no a lot, classier and better behaved crowd, NO commercials, plus, we're seeing a new class of films, for the better IMHO. Just venture into a googaplex for something not showing in the arthouses that's a must see.
...I love the big screen experience, too. And their popcorn is better (but probably not 10X the price better).People talk to each other during the film - just like they do at home in front of the TV. It's very annoying.
I only go to Ritz cinema to watch the artzy films... there you just don't have that cell phone problem. You lie down with dogs...
...as well as the "I'm more important than everyone else" gap when the cellphone users are over 30 - old enough to know better. My teenage daughter can't watch a DVD at home without playing Tetrus on her cell phone. The movie doesn't hold her short attention span.
Personally I hate cell phones - they should just be used for emergencies, IMHO - I don't want to be available to everyone all the time, especially when I'm driving along in my car rocking out to some good music.
It's big and red and it shuts the damn thing off.
.
China is using them in its universities to block the cheating, and in Germany they tried to jam the cell phones in jails, where criminals continued doing business from their cells... cells... shit... all this pun...However do not expect a theater jammer any time soon - who would like to be the first exposed to a large liability suit? A doctor on call, instead of staying home, going to the movies, with his patient die in the meantime...
But eventually, who knows... in fifty years?... there will be cell-free zones... as soon as they learn how to jam just one room and not every phone in a 1km radius.
Movies is one thing. Concerts, ESPECIALLY the recorded performances, is another. I have a CD where the artist asks the audience SEVERAL TIMES to turn OFF the phones... well, sure as hell, in the middle of one song there is that familiar Nokia tune...
And that sort of stuff is going to stay with us, unlike your unpleasant memories of a trip to the movie theater.
A Met Il Trovatore with fifty call just in the second act?
that a cell phone jamming device would be a pleasurable toy to own.
Not just movies, but in almost every aspect of life.
Sigh.....

I'm actually a bit difficult to get ahold of, so my friends tell me, because I rarely ever have my phone on me. I often use it as a portable message service. There are times when the phone rings, I screen, and if I don't feel like talking... well... I don't. I call them back later. And bring it into a movie?? Never!!! Nobody, but NOBODY is going to interrupt my viewing pleasure! If it's important, leave a message, and I'll call you back.
S'that simple.
Cheers,
Chris
