Where do I start?
This is directed by Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People) and stars Steve Coogan who seems determined to move beyond any vestiges of his previous existance as a comedian and become well I don't know what after seeing a film in which one of his roles is as himself alongside another actor immitating him..
A film of an unfilmable book.
A book about writing a book.
A film about a film about the making of a film about a book about writing a book.
Its confusing as hell. And equally funny.
Multilayered certainly.
When I saw it, people were laughing out loud, groaning at a few gruesome birth scenes and doing everything movie audiences are supposed to do but rarely ever do.
I think... THINK... its very very good indeed, but I may venture back fr another look.
There is so much going on that I doubt I caught all of it.
Follow Ups:
film seems watchable.
...it's a clever and funny miniature.I also highly recommend the hilarious 24 Hour Party People, which will resonate for anyone who has ever had been involved with the music/rock scene. Tres amusing.
It's not a linear experience; read it like you would read Joyce's
"Ulysses" of "Finnegan's Wake" or even Robert Graves' "The White
Goddess." If you start at the beginning with the aim of plowing
through to the end of any of these works you will be stupified before
you get very far. Read books like these at random, so to speak; open
them up and read until you stop and keep doing that and soon you will
have something approaching understanding of just what the fuck is
going on. It's quite a trip: like doing DMT in a bowling alley.
Regards,
d
