In an astonishing display of non-professional spoilerism, some critics discussed this movie's ending and real subject manner at the time of its release. Hilary Swank srs as a 32 year old boxer desperately seeking and then getting training and coaching form aging gym owner Clint Eastwood, who also directed and wrote the musical score. Morgan Freeman also stars and narrates (as he did in "March of the Penguins" and "The Shawshank Redmption"). The film holds up to multiple viewings, although of course the first time is the most enjoyable since you don't expect the major plot shift which comes about two thirds of the way through. Very thought provoking. Based on a couple of stories by the late F.X. O'Toole.
Follow Ups:
As usual if you make a film where human beings think for themselves instead of what they are told to think by rightwing Nazi Christians oout to control you and your brain then this is what happens. Plenty of such film critics out there.Heaven forbid, as it were, for people to actually use their own belief system on issues such as suicide. I don't have to agree with the character's decision (though in this case I do) at the end but I do understand it just as I would understand if she decided to fight for life. The decision is consistant with the character created and that is enough for it to work. The nut job Pat Robertson types -- well God will see through those folks.
Besides all the "FUN" people are going to be in hell anyway! Heaven? You get to talk to Ned Flanders and Jerry Fallwell and the idiots giving you pamphlets on the street trying to convert you. Hell? Well Madonna, Me Everyone who went through the playboy mansion like Richard Prior, Robin Williams (umm the girls) and Hugh Heffner along with Larry Flint -- other than the lawyers and killers (and you're already dead so they can;t get you twice) it's going to be a happening party extravaganza for eternity.
Umm God must have a sense of humour -- I mean look at the duck billed platipus and mankind in general.
